• > Kerrie just graduated from college with her
    > communications
    > degree and she needed to find a job quickly in order
    > to pay her
    > bills, including student loans and rent, as her
    > father had died a
    > while ago and her mother was in a nursing home due
    > to a series of
    > strokes. As she pored over the advertisements, she
    > saw one that
    > grabbed her eye. " male and female actors wanted for
    > unusual roles,
    > will get excellent pay and benefits, for the right
    > person, no
    > experience necessary, B.A. in Communications or
    > Theatre Arts
    > Preferred". Squealing with delight, she ran over to
    > her roommate Lisa
    > who was taking a shower. "Lisa! We're in luck! This
    > job might be what
    > we're looking for and might get us a better
    > apartment instead of this
    > basement dump in Boston!!
    > "Kerrie, where is the job interview going to
    > be? You know we
    > can't just fly out to Los Angeles on our budget! "
    > said Lisa.Kerrie
    > replied, "Don't worry, they're here interviewing at
    > the Park Plaza
    > Hotel! They are interviewing all week and they said
    > in the paper that
    > the right person will start immediately" . "That's
    > usually unheard
    > of , Kerrie, " said Lisa, everyone I know had to
    > send their resume
    > and wait for week or moths to even get in for the
    > interview. Well,
    > we have nothing to lose, so let's go!"
    > Kerrie and Lisa had been roommates at Umass
    > Amherst for all 4
    > years and they hit it off right away, especially
    > after Kerrie had
    > shown up after spring break wearing a plaster long
    > arm cast that
    > covered her thumb and ring and pinkie fingers and
    > went almost to her
    > armpit.
    > when Lisa saw that her eyes grew wide with envy and
    > near ecstacy as
    > Lisa somewhat was always turned on by seeing another
    > girl in a cast.
    > After much hemming and hawing, Kerrie finally told
    > her after waiting
    > all school year that her boyfriend told her he loves
    > to see casts on
    > girls and if Kerrie didn't want to be with him she
    > could leave him
    > because her was always going to be that way, but if
    > she did want to
    > stay, would she please wear one on her left arm for
    > the summer? So,
    > in the days before the Internet, Kerrie became a
    > regular caster that
    > year in 1990. Kerrie had, as her first cast a short
    > arm plaster cast
    > in 1990 when she first met Lisa in her Southwest
    > dormitory that
    > September.
    > Because she didn't want to be considered the
    > "resident weirdo" of
    > the dormitory, she told her floormates and friends
    > that she that she
    > had a certain orthopedic disorder that affected her
    > joints and had
    > to wear casts almost all the time. So, since all
    > college kids love to
    > sign plaster casts and the boys do love to see the
    > girls in a cast if
    > they can, Kerrie was an instant hit in her dorm.
    > She showed up,
    > always after a vacation, with one cast or more. from
    > short arm casts
    > to double long leg casts after senior spring break!
    > These casts were still on Kerrie that fateful day in
    > early June when
    > she went on her interview, in her wheelchair with
    > Lisa gleefully
    > pushing it. Kerrie was extremely skeptical about
    > getting a job as she
    > was somewhat shy, with a lanky long limbed build and
    > needing glasses.
    > She knew she had a nice build being 5'9" and 135
    > pounds with blonde
    > hair and green eyes but she was a C student. She
    > felt Kerrie had the
    > better chance being just as pretty with long red
    > wavy hair, blue eyes
    > and a more shapelier figure and was a solid straight
    > A student, making
    > Dean's List EVERY SEMESTER!!
    > The line was taking seemngly forever, and Kerrie
    > and Lisa had to
    > wait from 9:30 am to almost 4:00 in the afternoon.
    > Nearly everyone
    > departing had a look on their face of either
    > disgust, or that they
    > were talking to Martians and both Kerrie and Lisa
    > were getting
    > impatient, they were just getting ready to leave,
    > when finally, 15
    > people ahead of them abruptly left, leaving just
    > Kerrie and Lisa. A
    > loud high pitched female voice cried out in
    > frustration "Next"!!"
    > and Kerrie was rolled forward, casts and all, in
    > her wheelchair, by
    > her devoted friend Lisa.
    > As Kerrie and Lisa came into the interview booth,
    > she saw 2
    > females, one in her 50's with a librarian's demeanor
    > and another one
    > who looked vaguely familiar Kerrie thought to
    > herself "Have I seen
    > this lady before on TV?" Before she could think any
    > further, her
    > attention was jolted by her feeling her casts being
    > touched! "Hi,
    > honey!" said the familiar looking woman, who
    > appeared to be in her
    > late 40's, very stylish, almost sophisticated ." And
    > what happened to
    > you dear, that you need to wear those casts, you
    > must have had a
    > horrific accident!" Kerrie blushed and didn't know
    > what to say, the
    > truth or her usual story. Suddenly, it occurred to
    > her to tell the
    > truth, as she was sort of acting and if the lady
    > thought she was
    > weird, she wouldn't have to deal with her again
    > anyway. So, having
    > nothing to lose, Kerrie told her story. What she
    > said would affect
    > the rest of her life in ways unimaginable and would
    > eventually give
    > her more money than she ever dreamed of having!
    > Kerrie told Ms Thomas about her boyfriend back
    > home in Burlington,
    > the casts she wore and the stories she told her
    > friends and
    > schoolmates and how she adjusted to life wearing
    > these casts. Of
    > course Kerrie thought she was just being friendly
    > and breaking the
    > ice, or otherwise, alienating these people forever!
    > Instead,
    > suddenly the lady who looked like a librarian
    > exclaimed in her high
    > pitched voice, "Edie, come in back now!!!!"
    > extremely excitedly like
    > she had just found gold! "OK, Sara", said the
    > familiar looking one.
    > Kerrie and Lisa looked at each other in the way most
    > young ladies do
    > in wonderment with that face that says "what's going
    > on here?" After
    > about 10 long minutes, Edie came out and said to
    > both Kerrie and
    > Lisa, "If we can fly you to Los Angeles with all
    > your expenses paid
    > and hotel lodging included until you can find
    > permanent housing
    > there, would you consider working for us?" Hearing
    > this, Kerrie
    > almost fainted, as it was the least expected thing
    > she thought she
    > would hear. Kerrie talked with Lisa and they agreed
    > and both said in
    > unison, "let's go tomorrow!" Kerrie took out her
    > cellphone and called
    > her boyfriend to tell him the news. She promised
    > him she would try
    > to get back to Burlington once a month and when she
    > found a new
    > permanent place to live she would arrange for
    > tickets for him.
    > Lisa made hasty arrangements with the landlord
    > as the lease was
    > in her name and he let them out of the lease as he
    > wanted to renovate
    > the building anyway. They made it to Logan airport
    > with their
    > tickets and met Edie and Sara at the United Airlines
    > terminal.
    > Handicap arrangements were made for Kerrie and she
    > was wheeled onto
    > the airplane and helped into her chair. Her casted
    > legs were made to
    > fit her area so she'd be comfortable (Don't forget,
    > Edie and Sarah
    > bought First Class travel tickets) . Smiling. Edie,
    > the sophistcated
    > one, told Kerrie and Lisa her story about how she
    > was a soap star
    > actress and the soaps always had scenes of an actor
    > being in the
    > hospital in casts or needing medical care. The sets
    > always had to
    > set up from scratch as there was no central clearing
    > house to supply
    > the medical equipment and items so she decided to
    > cut back on her
    > acting career and start a business that would supply
    > the various
    > production studios, film companies and other filming
    > companies with
    > the desired medical materials.
    > As they landed, Kerrie was helped into a
    > wheelchair and went to
    > the airport terminal where they all met a stretch
    > limousine that took
    > them to the newest Hilton Hotel. All the paperwork
    > was filed and
    > Kerrie and Lisa had one of the best suites available
    > in the hotel!
    > Of course, Kerrie was the center of attention with
    > her 2 long leg
    > casts and all the eyes of the men followed her and
    > many a man was all
    > too willing to help her around, especially as she
    > was a tall blonde
    > wearing short shorts that showed every inch of her
    > long casts and a
    > short short showing her tanned, flat stomach
    > sporting a brand new
    > belly ring.
Edie called Kerrie in her hotel room and said,  "Kerrie, make sure you go to bed and get plenty of rest tonight, because tomorrow we are putting you in new casts and it will be a very strenuous day for you, and it will be the last night you will be sleeping in a regular bed for quite a while. You are playing a hospital patient in intensive care with the works."

Kerrie wondered just what kind of casts they would be, and the apprehension made her excited all the more as she was hoping for a full body cast or hip spica, but it wasn't altogether what she expected.

    Chapter 5

Edie departed from the hotel room after explaining all the details to both girls and Eric about the events of the next few weeks and, with
